Trombone Ensemble Nabou Claerhout

Rising star on trombone realises her dream with a large ensemble.

Five trombonists, guitar, double bass and drums: it’s a palette of sound that Nabou Claerhout could only dream of for a long time. Two years ago it became reality at the festival Gent Jazz. The group’s first album already drew comparisons with the dynamics of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and the infectious funk of Fred Wesley, one of Nabou’s earliest idols. Of course, the ensemble is all about the richly varied music of Nabou herself, but also about the players that the Belgian trombonist has brought together.

‘The aim is to indulge you with warm, soft, carrying parts and then discover the trombone’s spicy and cordial character,’ says Nabou. ‘I tried to make room for each individual. And of course there is also a starring role for the rhythm section.’ She previously played on our stage with her band N∆BOU. Her Trombone Ensemble has a completely different line-up, with peers from Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

‘Very contemporary, quite inventive’ (Downbeat).

Nabou Claerhout trombone, Nathan Surquin trombone, Rory Ingham trombone, Peter Delannoye trombone, Tobias Herzog bass trombone, Gijs Idema gitaar, Cyrille Obermüller double bass, Daniel Jonkers drums
