Trumpeter Steph Richards has steadily established herself in as an engaging experimentalist, working with pioneering artists in jazz, avant-pop and contemporary classical from John Zorn and Anthony Braxton to Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and Kronos Quartet. Her work is driven by a curiosity of what sensory variables are open to experimentation, often resulting in interdisciplinary works that include dance, for example, and are performed in unexpected spaces such as underwater.
The New York-based trumpeter developed her recent project Supersense in collaboration with scent artist Sean Raspet, with whom she developed a series of scratch cards included in the eponymous album. In her current Supersense Quartet, Steph Richards plays with renowned avant-jazz performers. They support her extraordinary techniques on trumpet, in compositions that offer the freedom to improvise, and plenty of subliminal grooves.
‘Steph Richards is a virtuoso of otherworldly trumpet sound’ (JazzTimes).
