Spring Streams Livestream Festival – Day 2

Springtime is here with brand new duo collaborations, live and streaming from the BIMHUIS.

This show is streamed live on BIMHUIS TV and can be followed on YouTube and Facebook.

For everyone who is in need of something positive and who’s ready to celebrate spring. We’ve got you covered with Spring Streams. For two night 24 musicians form exceptional duos to celebrate spring under the motto of The Rite of Spring, with 30 minutes performances. From rising stars to internationally renowned artists and from improv veterans to unique outsiders, they will join forces to challenge themselves and their audience with new sounds. Hosted by Koen Schouten, the second night will feature the following duos:

Oene van Geel/Albert van Veenendaal
Fuensanta Méndez/Han Bennink
Ernst Glerum/Timothy Banchet
Sanem Kalfa/Marta Warelis
Sun-Mi Hong/Tristan Renfrow
Joris Roelofs/Bram van Sambeek

OENE VAN GEEL/ALBERT VAN VEENENDAAL
Pianist Albert van Veenendaal and viola player Oene van Geel have known each other for decades. This started when Oene was in his teens and started visiting Albert for piano lessons. Here he discovered the fire and magic of improvisation. Later on they regularly came across each other while playing in various formations, and sharing a sense of discovery, openness and communication. As a duo they focus on original compositions and imaginative improvisations.

FUENSANTA MÉNDEZ/HAN BENNINK
Poetry and folk music are important elements in the compositions of singer/bassist Fuensanta Méndez, born and raised in Mexico and currently based in The Netherlands. As an improviser she will now perform with the most adventurous drummer in The Netherlands, Han Bennink. Since his revolutionary collaboration with Misha Mengelberg in the 1960s he has regularly performed in duo line-ups, for example with Irène Schweizer, Dave Douglas en Terrie Ex.

ERNST GLERUM/TIMOTHY BANCHET
Double bassist Ernst Glerum and pianist Timothy Blanchet will perform as a duo for the first time, with music inspired by the lost sound of the gut string. Expect cheerful up-tempo pieces with references to bassists such as Wendell Marshall, Jimmy Blanton and Oscar Pettiford.

SANEM KALFA/MARTA WARELIS
Brand new duo Sanem Kalfa and Marta Warelis will take the listeners on a journey which is gentle, smooth and passionate, as if hundreds of people are gathered to pray for the same cause. This journey will explore all kinds of powerful emotions, remarkable sounds and unusual techniques.

SUN-MI HONG/TRISTAN RENFROW
Sun-Mi Hong and Tristan Renfrow form a drum ensemble that is focused on the original expression of eccentric rhythm, unhindered by the envelope of genre, and explosive in character. Expect to hear the room resonate. The repertoire will exist of purely improvised material.

JORIS ROELOFS/BRAM VAN SAMBEEK
Bass clarinet player Joris Roelofs was educated as a jazz musician, in New York among other places, and became fascinated by both big bands and classical orchestras. Now he forms a duo with bassoon player Bram van Sambeek, an equally open-minded musician whose repertory encompasses Vivaldi as well as Metallica. Their instruments, bass clarinet and bassoon, form a perfect match, and the two have collaborated before on Roelofs’s compositions Nietzsche Serenade and Truth and Lies, which are both based on Nietzsche’s philosophy.
