MEHMET POLAT TRIO

Unique trio on traditional instruments instruments, the ney, the kora and the ud, with new music rooted in various cultures, Ottoman, Anatolian, Balkan and West-African.

Coming from Istanbul and currently living in Amsterdam, Mehmet Polat is an internationally respected innovator of the ud, the Arabic lute. He augmented the instrument by adding two bass strings, and he developed a new left hand technique. Departing from his background in Anatolian folk music and Ottoman classical music he explores styles and traditions from all over the world.

In his trio he performs with Dymphi Peeters on the African string instrument kora, as well as Sinan Arat on the ney, the flute from Persian, Turkish and Arabic music. Original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, connecting past and present.

‘There is a grace about this trio, nothing is rushed, time slows down. The music is not afraid to breathe, to pause, and to create space’ (World Music Central).
