MAZE & OKKYUNG LEE

Electroacoustic ensemble MAZE plays new music by (and with) cellist Okkyung Lee, an integral figure in New York’s experimental music scene, alongside work by media artist Jacob Kirkegaard.

Amsterdam-based ensemble MAZE is dedicated to performing music that challenges the idea of fixed form and a fixed listening perspective. Following previous collaborations with Robert Ashley, Christian Marclay, Annea Lockwood and Michael Pisaro, MAZE now presents a festival dedicated to sonic textures and field recordings.

For this concert at the Bimhuis MAZE has developed a new composition in collaboration with Okkyung Lee, leading cellist from the New York improvised music scene. Her unorthodox playing draws from noise, jazz Western classical music and Korean folk music. Additionally, the ensemble will perform the acoustic version of 4 Rooms by Jacob Kirkegaard, for which MAZE members Anna La Berge and Yannis Kyriakides have developed new scores for iPads. Their original version of 4 Rooms can be described as a sonic portrait of four abandoned rooms inside the radioactive area around Chernobyl. Danish artist Jacob Kirkegaard released it in 2006, 20 years after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl.
