Maite Hontelé’s NJJO Goes Mambo

Latin-trumpeter leads her version of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of The Netherlands.

Trumpeter Maite Hontelé is the new artistic leader of NJJO. She formed the eighth edition of this orchestra of super talents. For two years she has coached the NJJO for a concert series dedicated to mambo. Maite Hontelé is an expert in this field: from 2009 to 2018 she has lived in Colombia. In that decade, she released five albums, two of which were nominated for a Latin Grammy. With her salsa band she gave concerts all over the world.

‘There’s not just one kind of mambo, but a whole range of mambo variants and new contemporary cross-overs,’ says Maite. ‘A broad spectrum of musical possibilities: depth and joyfulness guaranteed!’ The repertory includes songs from Maite’s albums, alongside compositions written especially for NJJO. For NJJO Goes Mambo, she has collaborated with two multiple Grammy winners: American arranger/trumpeter Philip Lassiter, who has also collaborated with Prince, and Colombian producer/arranger Juancho Valencia.
