In our new series DATSKAT we mix jazz with hip-hop and (neo)soul. Our stage is given to the established and new generation of artists who represent this sound. This edition features Jaron Marshall.
JaRon Marshall has captivated festivals and venues all over the world as the keyboard player of Black Pumas, the psychedelic soul band from Austin, Texas. In recent years, this group has received a total of seven Grammy nominations. Now JaRon presents his own music, which he describes as a marriage between jazz and hip-hop. His band features, among others, saxophonist Brian Donohoe, who composed for and recorded with Snarky Puppy in their beginning years.
JaRon Marshall has collaborated with all kinds of musicians from Austin while recording his first solo releases The Gold Tapes, Vol. 1-3 and The Black Power Tape. On his predominantly instrumental album Earth Sounds, released earlier this year, he steps into the spotlight as a beatmaker and producer. Some of his examples are jazz-hop influencers such as Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, and old school soul giants such as Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder.
‘JaRon Marshall explores feelings of rage, power, pride, and, ultimately, peace… the myriad of emotions that come with being Black in America, all against a backdrop of soothing, soulful music’ (Okayplayer).
The support act is Amsterdam based fusion hip-hop group RADIOHOP. Inspired by Herbie Hancock, Kaidi Tatham and Azymuth they explore new sonic areas between groove and jazz. In the fall of 2023 they will release their first album Kill Your Darlings with Kid Sublime.
