Dokzaal BIMHUIS & SPACE IS THE PLACE

Instant Composers Pool Krokettenfestijn

A spectacular afternoon in the Dokzaal with the godfathers of improvisation music.

Space is the Place, in collaboration with the BIMHUIS, presents a spectacular afternoon in the Dokzaal, a hidden gem in the center of Amsterdam. The ICP Orchestra, the godfathers of improvisation music in Amsterdam, still with Han Bennink at the helm, continues to play with dedication, inventiveness and courage even after 56 years. Also on the program are young, strong musicians with a love for the ICP aesthetics and afterwards the famous homemade croquettes by John Pastinaak and Luc Ex.

ICP
The ICP, known as one of the most creative groups in modern jazz, was brought into life by drummer Han Bennink & pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg in 1967. Although Mengelberg passed away in 2017, his compositions are kept alive by a basically steady line-up. His compositions are often the starting point for the orchestra, but no ICP concert is ever the same.

Michael Moore saxophone/clarinet, Ab Baars saxophone/clarinet, Tobias Delius tenor sax, Joost Buis trombone, Thomas Heberer trumpet, Mary Oliver violin/viola, Guus Janssen piano, Ernst Glerum bass, Han Bennink drums

SUN-MI HONG & ALISTAIR PAYNE
Trumpet and drums form an unusual line-up. However, Alistair Payne and Sun-Mi Hong make it sound completely natural through their imaginative playing. They are both great fans of the ICP orchestra and are honoured to contribute to this special afternoon.

MARTA WARELIS SOLO
Marta Warelis is a Polish pianist, who has been active in the Amsterdam improv scene for some years now. With her preference for improvisation and experimentation, she continually aims for new sounds and influences. Her work draws inspiration from genres, from cumbia and Angolan dance music to jazz and western classical music.

REINIER BAAS & JORIS ROELOFS
Bass clarinetist Joris Roelofs is known for his sublime technique and collaboration with New York and Dutch top musicians. Next to his own music projects, Joris chairs the Clarinet Department (Jazz) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and does a PhD at the University of Amsterdam.

Reinier Baas (1985) is a guitarist, composer and recording artist from the Netherlands with a DIY approach and an idiosyncratic body of work. This afternoon these well-known innovative musicians team up as a duo and play ao pieces of the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra.
