In our new series DATSKAT we mix jazz with hip-hop and (neo)soul. Our stage is given to the established and new generation of artists who represent this sound. This edition features Butcher Brown.
The five core members of Butcher Brown have jazz skills, but are obviously from the hip-hop generation. Old school funk and soul are interwoven with classic 808 beats on their albums #Kingbutch and Triple Trey. The artwork for those records was created by visual artist Lou Beach, who also designed covers for fusion and soul giants such as Weather Report and Bill Withers. At the same time the Butcher Brown YouTube channel contains covers of rap artists such as Blackalicious and Notorious B.I.G.
Butcher Brown hails from the thriving music scene of Richmond, Virginia, that brought forth the influential neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo. Independently from one another, the band members are celebrating success as well. Devone Harris a.k.a. DJ Harrison, keyboardist and visionary of the group, played with Jack White and released his solo album Hazy Moods on the Stones Throw label. Drummer Corey Fonville has also played in the bands of Nicholas Payton and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah.
After the concert, DJ Lucas Benjamin will host a party in our café. Starting out as a hip-hop dancer, he is now a connaisseur who takes you with him into the warm world of soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop and more. He is not limited to one era, playing gems from the 70s and the present.
