BASKLARINET FESTIJN

Ten leading bass clarinet players from every genre will perform during this new bass clarinet festival. Main guest Harry Sparnaay closes his influential career with his performances at this event.

The first Basklarinet Festijn is dedicated to the bass clarinet, the distinctive instrument with its remarkable sonorous qualities. Featured guest is the influential bass clarinet player and teacher Harry Sparnaay, who celebrates his 70th birthday with the conclusion of his exceptional musical career.

Harry Sparnaay is one of the world’s finest and well-known bass clarinet players. He has performed at every relevant festival in the world, has received many awards and has collaborated with prominent orchestras and ensembles. Sparnaay has given an incredible boost to both Dutch and  international contemporary music. Over 650 compositions were written especially for him by composers that include Luciano Berio, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis and Isang Yun. The Basklarinet Festijn is the final opportunity to catch Harry Sparnaay live in concert.

The concerts in Amsterdam, Groningen and Den Bosch will feature as many as ten bass clarinet players. The will join forces in two nonets from the 1980s plus a new tentet put together by Tobias Klein. Another new composition in the concert is a trio by Roderik de Man written especially for Harry Sparnaay. Improvised music during the concert will include performances form such international guests as Claudio Puntin, Steffen Schorn and Ernesto Molinari among others.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
