A Turkish percussionist, a Bulgarian flutist, a Hungarian cellist and a German pianist: together they form Arifa, with which they breath new life into old musical traditions. With his haunting playing on the kaval, or Balkan flute, Zhivko Vasilev plays an important part on the recent album Danubian Voyage. A wonderful combination of music from the Balkans and the Middle-East, which sounds soothing and exciting at the same time. The album was chosen as the best Dutch World Music album release 2022 by MixedWorldMusic.
Arifa excels in combining Eastern traditional and Western classical instruments, as well as ancient folk music with jazz and contemporary improvised music. Arifa’s debut at our stage was rewarded with the maximum of 5 stars by de Volkskrant and album reviews were equally positive. The group has experienced a stormy development with many performances at renowned international venues and festivals. Special guest is singer Claron McFadden.
