to think outside the box: that has always been a motto to live by for saxophonist hans dulfer. musically, dulfer has always been at the forefront. he played psychedelic free jazz and created the first dutch world music. he was the first jazz musician to collaborate with house djs, and he achieved pop star status in japan with the unique blend of heavy guitars, beats and sax with the record big boy. he was also at the cradle of the dutch jazz scene, organising legendary concerts and co-founding our venue. in our anniversary month, a performance by this 'tough tenor' simply has to happen, 50 years after his first concert at the bimhuis. to this day, dulfer prefers to play live, at the most diverse venues and with relentless energy. as always, he brings a true all-star band including guitarist jerôme hol and drummer hans eijkenaar. dulfer has informed us that he likes to see a full house, so you know what to do.

new york saxophonist oded tzur has ushered in a new era for his instrument by giving it a whole new voice, one that is described by the guardian as a “unique tenor sax whisper”. often recalled by the artist as a ten year leap of faith, this complete reimagining of the instrument has established him as a torchbearer of spiritual jazz. his music is more than a conversation, states the new york city jazz record: “it is an interactive prayer”. my prophet, the third album of tzur’s quartet on ecm records, anoints music as the epicenter of a spiritual discipline: a prophet that tells us not about the future, but about who we really are. through a myth-like suite, the bandleader tells the story of an all-powerful deity, experiencing everything from sobering murmurs to cathartic, unabashed ecstasy.

in the past fifty years our venue has been an axis an international network of musicians who prioritize freedom, improvisation and independence. oscar jan hoogland celebrates this with twelve international top players who epitomize the spirit of the bimhuis. in a variety of line-ups they celebrate the bimhuis-sound, such as misha mengelberg’s mischievous swing, senegalese vocals, the chicago scene, crackling electronics, sean bergin’s south african kwelas, free improvisation alongside challenging composition, the wayward the ex, sultry ethiopian melodies, latin grooves and jazz by grandmasters such as monk, ellington and sun ra. oscar jan hoogland is a leading figure in the amsterdam improv scene. as misha mengelberg’s last student, he has strong ties to the history that is related to fifty years of bimhuis. especially for this concert he formed a supergroup in which he plays piano and electric clavichord.

‘new cuban groove’ is what they call it themselves, cuban music of the year 2024 that exudes joy and energy. the members of el comité have each earned an excellent reputation in both jazz and cuban music. as a band they cannot be categorized and their virtuosity allows them to steer clear from clichés. on their new album carrousel we hear influences from latin jazz and thelonious monk alongside classical melodies and covers by, among others, rosalía and the weeknd. ‘the name el comité is actually a joke,’ said drummer rodney barreto in an interview with dutch magazine slagwerkkrant. ‘when you speak of a “comité” in cuba, one immediately thinks of government institutions such as comité de defensa de la revolución, so people tend to laugh when they hear our name.’ co-founder barreto played with cuban legends such as omara portuondo and chucho valdés. the other members also have impressive careers full of prestigious names such as buena vista social club, irakere, david murray, esperanza spalding, and richard bona. after the concert the music will continue with salsa panorama, a cuban salsa party at our café with an incredible view, where everybody is invited to dance.

misha mengelberg’s songs are often funny and moving at the same time, with catchy melodies and crazy tones. misha was the main composer of the eccentric icp orchestra, which has been around for half a century. drummer han bennink is still part of the gang and is known all over the world. he can drum on literally anything. the songs will be performed by a very special guest who has sung many operas, soprano claron mcfadden. everyone, young and old, can sing along!

the famous icp orchestra returns to our stage once again. in 1967, together with pianist/composer misha mengelberg, han bennink stood at the foundations of this orchestra, which is currently known as one of the most creative groups in modern jazz. mengelberg passed away in 2017, but his compositions are kept alive by a basically steady line-up. mengelberg’s compositions are the starting point, but no icp concert is ever the same. the musicians of the icp orchestra have learned to deal with each other’s quirks, when it comes to timing and intonation. they know how to confuse each other, to bend or derail the music while performing. because of that, the music is full of surprises, unexpected turns, flexible grace and weird eruptions. “…the instant composers pool orchestra, from amsterdam, ….they are scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders.” – the new york times

in october 2024, thirteen years have passed since piet noordijk died. from rotterdam pubs to large halls with the metropole orchestra, he captivated with his effervescent saxophone playing, making him one of the tastemakers of dutch jazz. three outstanding alto saxophonists – benjamin herman, sean payne and miguel valente – pay tribute to their famous colleague, accompanied by pianist francesca tandoi, double bassist matheus nicolaiewsky and drummer sander smeets during this fourth edition of the european alto festival. with the festival, benjamin herman wants to bring great alto saxophonists from other european countries to dutch audiences. ‘there are so many great european musicians who are invisible to jazz lovers in nearby countries. i really enjoy being able to bring these crazy saxophonists the the netherlands. they play so amazing, you don’t know what you’re hearing.’ says benjamin herman. young brit sean payne is a much sought-after saxophonist in the uk, who released his debut album in 2023. at the age of 13, he already entered the final of the bbc young jazz musician of the year, and has since performed as a sideman and/or bandleader at venues such as ronnie scott's, vortex and the royal albert hall. saxophonist miguel valente studied at the conservatorium van amsterdam and has performed on our stage on several occasions, including the marmoucha orchestra, m.a.s.t and nausyqa, who have just released their debut album.

in this double concert, we present young promising improvisers who will showcase new work. clarinetist and composer federico calcagno is known as one of the most innovative musicians in the european jazz and improvised music scene. he has received prestigious awards such as the "keep an eye the records 2023" and the "premio internazionale giorgio gaslini 2020". with his latest album, "mundus inversus" (habitable records, 2024), he presents a contemporary jazz ensemble with eight international musicians. inspired by the dutch painter hieronymus bosch and the tarot archetype of the hanged man, the music ranges from delicate passages to intense outbursts, where melodies and harmonies come together in special ways. the music of singer vera morais and saxophonist hristo goleminov emerges from the fusion of poetry and improvisation. their debut album "consider the plums", based on poems by william carlos williams, received international acclaim and was listed in the top 20 albums of 2022 by jazz.pt (portugal). for their concert at our venue, they will bring new material - original lyrics and instrumental pieces - showing their development after three years of touring europe.

electro-acoustic duo stemeseder - lillinger explore the boundaries of contemporary music with their new album antumbra. using plucked, percussive and electronic instruments, and influences from sample culture and folk music, they create a rich sound world. antumbra builds on previous works such as penumbra and umbra, integrating historic acoustic instruments into electronic constructions. this post-genre work explores meta-beats, multidimensional structures and collage techniques, depicting both utopia and dystopia. recorded in various locations including new york and athens, the album offers a reflection on the present and projections of possible futures. berlinde deman is the regular tuba player of flat earth society orchestra and has worked with various bands and projects from the jazz, theatre and classical worlds, including dave douglas, ab baars trio and jef neve. she did residencies in sweden, luxembourg, the netherlands and belgium. fascinated by the tuba's precursor, the serpent, she explores the boundaries of peace and tranquillity in her solo programme with this rare 16th-century instrument and loops/electronics. her melancholic and unique sound brought her together with artists such as graindelavoix and hans beckers, and in her solo work she creates a world far away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday.

in the bimhuis productions series reflex we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. the curator of this edition is pianist marta warelis. she formed a group with well-known improvising musicians from various cities including amsterdam and chicago. they depart from silence, elements of folk and deep grooves, towards freedom and transformation. in this new band, marta warelis places her piano and synthesizer opposite the clarinets of karen ng and ab baars and the trumpet of ben lamar gay, which appears as a singing voice. the fundament is laid by bassist ingebrigt håker flaten and drummer frank rosaly. marta warelis has a strong preference for improvisation and experiment in all kinds of styles. she continuously aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. the polish-born improviser explores the timbral possibilities of the acoustic piano on the one hand, and the electronic synthesizer on the other. since 2019 she’s part of the amsterdam-based improv collective doek.

with group of friends, yoràn vroom presents his own work from his albums ‘across a spectrum’ (2021) and ‘a forgotten story’ (2023). the music of ‘across a spectrum’ is mainly about the richness of caribbean culture, which the musicians give their own take on with collective improvisation as the common denominator. the second album ‘a forgotten story’, is the live album of vrooms' reflex project, the concert series of our bimhuis productions department where musicians present their take on the current zeitgeist. the virtuoso drummer called together family and friends to reflect on the covid years. vroom took the perspective of ‘a history student from the next century, relying on backward sources’. together with four percussionists and two dancers, among others, he told a story of dizzying repetition, hope and losing it. now vroom presents a combination of both albums with his group of friends, five virtuoso musicians that vroom loves to play with. special guest is mehdi nassouli, the internationally acclaimed moroccan singer and player of the stringed instrument guembri.

fenix's atmospheric music takes you on an imaginative trip. catchy melodies and irresistible grooves are playfully alternated by this electronic-acoustic band. together they play a colorful landscape of music created in the moment. no performance sounds the same, as this band loves to improvise. what can be predicted: their music makes you move! in the family concert series groove beest you will discover why some music makes you want to tap your foot to the beat or jump up start dancing. together with mc groove beest and the band members you will feel the groove. sitting still is not an option; so jump, dance and clap along and unleash your inner beast. get in the mood with this video.

for every one of its performances, the group حمد (ahmed] selects a composition by ahmed abdul-malik, pioneer at crossing jazz with eastern music. this composition serves as a basis for an improvisation that can have a different character every time, often with the emphasis on rhythm and groove. the core is a melody, which could lead to intensely physical and propulsive ensemble playing, as heard on the group’s recent album wood blues on the astral spirits label. the band received critical acclaim in, among others, the wire, pitchfork and downbeat. حمد (ahmed] is a platform for four musicians from london, berlin and paris, who all follow their own paths in improvised music. at each performance of the band they reconnect with renewed energy. the pioneering bassist from new york, who played with legends such as art blakey and coleman hawkins, experimented with traditional eastern instruments and explored eastern music on albums such as jazz sahara and east meets west.

the conservatorium van amsterdam is full of top talent. so is the cva large ensemble, which will make its appearance tonight. the ensemble will collaborate with a special guest , vocalist michael mayo. the american vocalist is the definition of a super talent, effortlessly switching between the most diverse styles and skills, from neo-soul to bop and from crooning to beatboxing. already at his first performance in our hall, with ben wendel's supergroup high heart, mayo blew everyone away with his unprecedented vocal control and solo improvisations. his latest album fly, featuring guest appearances by nate smith, shai maestro and others, will be released on october 4.

as the co-founder of phronesis, jasper høiby gave a new impulse to the jazz piano trio. with 3elements he continues this journey. with a melodic and bold sound of visceral and kinetic musical interplay and featuring a revolving line-up of some of europe’s best young talent, his latest release like water features piano prodigy chaerin im from south korea and jamie peet, a uniquely eclectic drummer from the netherlands. when it comes to double bass, jasper høiby is one of the greats of british jazz. over the past decade, the danish-born player has become renowned for his fearlessly expressive sound, charismatic stage presence and distinct compositional prowess. aside from his international success with phronesis, he has formed fellow creatures and planet b. his music transcends genres, combining jazz, folk and rock influences with cutting edge improvisation.

greetje bijma & oceanic it's a remarkable collaboration between leftfield techno dj and producer oceanic and jazz vocal artist greetje bijma; a sparkling hybrid at the intersection of improvisation and electronics. greetje bijma can rightfully be called a legend: in 1990, she was the first woman to win the buma boy edgar prize (the most prestigious dutch award for jazz and improvised music), and she has collaborated with the likes of jasper van ’t hof, willem breuker, and louis andriessen. since the 1980s, this free jazz singer has been an integral part of the dutch jazz scene. when pieter jansen of the record label yeyeh met bijma, he was instantly starstruck. he asked her if she would be interested in collaborating with a young electronic music producer, and her answer was an immediate and enthusiastic yes. enter oceanic. this rising star in the dutch electronic underground is known for his mechanical rhythms, minimalist melodies, and vibrant electronics. although they come from completely different generations, they had an instant musical connection. expect mind-expanding vocals, danceable rhythms, and breathtaking beats. luxe (live) this london dj brings a unique blend of classical music and cutting-edge electronic beats like you’ve never heard before. with her background in flute, piano, and vocals, she brings deep musicality to every set, giving her tracks a refreshing twist in the club scene. whether you see her shining at major festivals like waterworks and field day or elsewhere, luxe’s performances are always a journey through a fascinating world of sound. experience her energetic and boundary-pushing music live at amsterdam dance event at the bimhuis. ade opens with five arts & culture opening concerts with leading figures in art forms from all fields. this concert is selected to be one of the five opening concerts of ade 2024.  

forget everything you thought you knew about the tuba. theon cross belongs to that rare class of musicians who have reinvented their instrument. with his masterful playing, innovative studio techniques, and originality, he gives the tuba a modern makeover. his sound lies at the intersection of r&b, hip-hop, and jazz, creating brass beats with a cinematic approach and infused with modern flair. in his hometown of london, he draws inspiration from the powerful uk bass, dub, and grime scenes. at the same time, he makes deep connections with the afro-caribbean roots and dance music of his ancestors. theon cross is not just a musician; he’s a game-changer. as part of the groundbreaking jazz band sons of kemet, alongside the brilliant saxophonist shabaka hutchings, he sets the tone for the new generation of british jazz. beyond that, he has shared the stage with some of the brightest talents of today, such as nubya garcia, moses boyd, and cassie kinoshi. and as if that wasn’t enough, he has collaborated with rap legends like stormzy, kano, and pharoahe monch, and played a key role in the acclaimed album fifth season by pop-avant-gardist lafawndah. ‘cross hasn’t just connected his instrument with the sound-system culture that informs his music, he’s made it an integral component of that tradition.’ - pitchfork  

diaspora radio diaspora radio, originally born as a radio show on echobox radio, has evolved into a platform where creators and creatives share their stories of migration, biculturalism, identity, and creativity. what started as a place where voices from the swana (south west asia & north africa) diaspora could be heard has now grown into a platform that also bridges different cultures and experiences. 22:00-23:00 live act 23:00-00:00 abadir & hogir abadir (rami abadir) is a producer and sound designer born in cairo and based in berlin. his work combines experimental, club, and ambient music, inspired by themes such as fiction, memory, and cultural artifacts. his most recent album, ison, released on svbkvlt, reinterprets his childhood memories of coptic, syriac, maronite, greek orthodox, and catholic services and choirs. he distorts these into a contemporary electronic mass where all elements converge to create a unique, almost surreal experience. he has performed at many festivals, including ctm, rewire, primavera sound, unsound and fiber. hogir loves to spread joy through his instruments and classical instruments of the west to both discover and promote the rhythm of music. his performances ranging from funk to free-jazz, fusion, electronic, experimental to baroque orchestra music. he endeavours to combine musical and orientalist music with the disciplines of jazz and western music in the melting pot of percussion instruments with his own unique style. together, they create an immersive experience where oriental sounds and futuristic tones resonate, resulting in an intense, almost surreal musical journey. 00:30-01:15 karima el fillali karima el fillali (1987) is a dutch singer and songwriter known for her enchanting voice and deeply moving live performances. el fillali brings traditional arabic music into the 21st century. she uses ancient poetry by sufi mystics like mansur al-hallaj and ibn arabi, exploring themes of love, light and darkness, joy, and sorrow. at the same time, her music is heavily influenced by western classical music, hip-hop, and art pop. during her travels to morocco, she became fascinated by the spiritual music of her homeland and began studying arabic and delving into traditional music styles such as gnawa and tarab. upon returning to the netherlands, she became known for her tributes to oum kalthoum and her experimental work, blending influences from africa, europe, and the middle east. in 2021, she released her debut ep bihar el hawa, where she combines ancient sufi poetry and traditional arabic singing techniques with modern compositions. 01:15-02:45 dj

ghost-note performing live is a dazzling experience with no less than eight masters of funk, spearheaded by drummer robert ‘sput’ searight and percussionist nate werth. together they are at the heart of the successful fusion formation snarky puppy. in ghost-note they collaborate with members from the bands of prince, erykah badu, herbie hancock, kendrick lamar. they expand the boundaries of funk, with influences from afrobeat, hip-hop and psychedelia. after forming in 2015, ghost-note has taken the world by storm. the group’s two studio albums—2018’s swagism and 2015’s fortified—have earned critical acclaim and popular success around the globe, now they return with mustard n’ onions, which proves that the band represents a growing family of musicians. the original mission remains the same: ghost-note is pushing funk music into the future, building on the pioneering foundations laid out by the likes of james brown and sly & the family stone.

like our venue, the willem breuker kollektief saw the light of day fifty years ago. the legendary orchestra, which was active until 2012, will now give its first performance in renewed form. most of today’s members have played under the leadership of the orchestra’s namesake and composer, who died in 2010. out of the ten musicians, three have been members from the start. the concert will be introduced by duos featuring musicians who have a special connection to breukers' music, alternated with a performance of “www.brandhout.nl” for a string octet consisting of members of the dudok kwartet and the mondriaan kwartet. during his life, willem breuker continued to invigorate dutch music life with new impulses. as a composer, saxophonist and clarinetist he united divergent styles in theatrical, cabaret-like performances for as wide an audience as possible. he traveled the globe for thirty-five years with his own ensemble, willem breuker kollektief; he ran a record company, bv haast; and for decades he organized the festival klap op de vuurpijl for jazz, improvised, and contemporary classical music. the willem breuker kollektief received global acclaim for its groundbreaking nature, uniting jazz and improvisation with european influences from theatre, film and classical music, among others. alongside willem breuker’s original compositions, the kollektief presented remarkable renditions of the music of kurt weill and george gershwin. many performances and albums were created with special guests, such as vera beths, gisela may, greetje kauffeld, loes luca, and freek de jonge.

in this double concert, we give the stage to two young bands coming from amsterdam's thriving jazz scene. first of all, the ella zirina trio. zirina was a young maker with us and has made a huge progression since then. within a year and a half, it is impossible to imagine the dutch jazz scene without her. she made an an appearance at north sea jazz festival (with kurt rosenwinkel and joey baron), released her edison-nominated debut album intertwined and shared the stage with musicians such as tineke postma, ben van gelder, jesse van ruller, reinier baas, pablo held and yuri honing. now she performs with her trio, consisting of young spanish bassist ton felices and top drummer jamie peet. the alice leggett & chaerin im *orchestra* is the joint project of saxophonist alice legget and pianist chaerin im. they write the music, which is a mix of groove, free improvisation and focused interplay. they performed during our rough diamonds series in early june, and now return to our venue.  

tonbruket continues to add new dimensions to their multifaceted sonic worlds. unlike the previous five albums, which have featured a plethora of synths and electronics, their most recent effort light wood, dark strings sounds more organic and acoustic. jazz, rock, kraut, psychedelia, folk, blues: these are all colours on the extended palette of the swedish group. ruggedness is an essential part of their identity, but surprisingly, it's the band’s shared love for classical music that makes them unique. tonbruket is also known for their collaboration with singer-songwriter ane brun. the group was founded fifteen years ago by bassist dan berglund, formerly of e.s.t. fame and currently part of rymden. keyboardist and violinist martin hederos was a member of swedish rock band the soundtrack of our lives. guitar and pedal steel player johan lindström worked with rebecka törnqvist and elvis costello. and drummer andreas werliin previously performed on our stage in fire! orchestra and the trio ghosted featuring oren ambarchi and johan berthling.

joel ross has established himself in the american jazz top. several times he has been voted best vibraphone player of the year in the downbeat critics poll. on his recent album nublues, he mixes bach with gospel and his own original compositions with gems by john coltrane and thelonious monk. he combines the melancholy of blues and ballads with bright and shimmering playing on the instrument he has made his own, the vibraphone. nublues appeared on the legendary jazz label blue note records. joel ross made name at a young age in the chicago jazz scene, and he currently lives in brooklyn, new york. in recent years he played with an impressive number of bands. with big names such as joshua redman and wynton marsalis, but also with promising artists such as marquis hill and immanuel wilkins. on his own albums he reveals his qualities as a sophisticated composer and band leader, whether he deals with atmospheric sounds or grooves inspired by dance and hip-hop.

as part of our legacy series, it is high time to put cellist and composer ernst reijseger in the spotlight. and that is not difficult with such a track record: reijseger provided music for 12 werner herzog films and recorded more than 200 albums with musicians from far-flung disciplines. the la times calls reijseger a genre bender. as an improvising cellist, he is a creative partner of actors, poets, dancers, painters, sculptors and photographers. with oscar isaac and keegan michael key, among others, he played and provided the music for shakespeare's hamlet in nyc in 2017. his connection to our venue is no small one; reijseger performed at the first bimhuis on the oudeschans back in its opening month in october 1974. since then, he has appeared on our stage more than 150 times with the likes of theo loevendie, icp, clusone trio, gerry hemingway and sean bergin. invariably, the music of this boy edgar prize winner remains unpredictable. so too this evening. he presents a twelve-member agile ensemble under the title picture this, a name that refers to the imagination and films for which reijseger composed and brought together musicians from all over the world. reijseger unites high-flying soloists who are at the same time great ensemble players.

the sun ra arkestra has been spreading its afro-futuristic jazz message for 66 years and keeps continuing the cosmic jazz heritage of the mythical pianist, composer and electronic music pioneer sun ra. the collective space is the place, named after sun ra’s work, brings the orchestra to amsterdam. the concert will be preceded by performances of likeminded musicians: the improv duo of bassist farida amadou and guitarist jasper stadhouders, followed by the revolutionary american poet moor mother in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist lukas koenig. dj collective fuuturejazz ends the evening at the café. 19:30-20:00 farida amadou & jasper stadhouders from noise punk to improv jazz: farida amadou has mastered it all. the bass guitarist has collaborated with the likes of linda sharrock, ken vandermark and thurston moore. now she forms a duo with jasper stadhouders, guitarist in band like cactus truck and spinifex, where he’s known for his unbridled and unconventional improvisations. 20:15-20:55 moor mother & lukas koenig through her work, vocalist and poet camae ayewa aka moor mother illuminates the principles of her multidisciplinary collaborative practice black quantum futurism, a theoretical framework informed by historical black ontologies. multi-instrumentalist lukas koenig, who plays drums in moor mother’s band, has previously collaborated with the likes of david murray, jamaaladeen tacuma and steven bernstein. 21:15-22:30 sun ra arkestra sun ra was known for his layered big band music full of african and eastern influences mixed with unusual sounds from his analogue keyboards. he was named after the egyptian sun god and was purported to have come from saturn, which he expressed in cosmic themes and titles such as space is the place and astro black. originally based in chicago, the arkestra toured the world in flamboyant pharaoh costumes. since sun ra’s ‘ascension’ in 1993, the arkestra continues his heritage. band leader marshall allen, saxophonist since the early days, recently celebrated his 100th birthday. he’s still part of the band in the us, but overseas he will hand over his duties to saxophonist knoel scott. the sun ra arkestra has made countless albums and is being recognized to this day as a spectacular live band. sun ra’s ‘afro-futurist’ jazz is as influential as ever, for example on the current generation of dj’s and producers. dj collective fuuturejazz - after the concert at the café. enter the sonic playground of fuuturejazz, an experimental electronic crew guided by the eternal spirit of jazz. jazz, not strictly in the sense of swung drums and elaborate horn solo's, but in it's broader essence of taking conventions, bending and breaking them, of improvisation and playfulnes, of coming together and building something new. about space is the place space is the place has been collaborating with bimhuis frequently since 2018 via their series of interplanetary and intergalactic nights. with the name being a direct ode to sun ra's cosmic jazz legacy, we are thrilled to have the arkestra in amsterdam at this special event. space is the place firmly believes in the unconditional, unrelenting, qualitative, and original archetype of the performing arts: improvisation. since 2015, amsterdam-based sitp has organized over 1000 progressive and adventurous concerts with a focus on improvised music, experimentation, and jazz. sitp forms a creative breeding ground that stimulates its local, internationally-oriented improv scene, always keen on crossing genres and disciplines as well as challenging artists to perform in new formations—both through sitproductions and by encouraging new concepts.    

the fifth bimhuis composition assignment, during our 50th birthday, has been awarded to composer-conductor tijn wybenga.with his brainteaser method, band leader and sound wizard tijn wybenga invented a way to capture the new jazz generation in music. to celebrate fifty years of bimhuis he will present his renewed orchestra, plus special guests from the outer limits of music. expect recycled samples, electronics, orchestral grooves, wild improv and spacey soundscapes. as our nieuwe maker, tijn wybenga took the opportunity to seize the essence of the current bimhuis community. the brainteaser orchestra (formerly am.ok) reflects a new generation that defies categorization. the music has all been written with the brainteaser method: recording live improvisations of band members and guest soloists, cutting and pasting hundreds of samples from those recordings and restructuring them in new ways, into new compositions. while wybenga’s approach is unabashed and playful, the orchestra reveals a great promise for the future. ‘a compelling tapestry. tijn wybenga, an unapologetic bandleader, steers the ship with fervor through an odyssey that defies categorization. rejecting the constraints of rigid genre descriptions, the ensemble explores heavy grooves, mesmerizing ballads, and ethereal soundscapes. anything is conceivable as wybenga propels his crew towards the next horizon, embracing the freedom to traverse diverse musical landscapes’ (jazz in europe). ahead of the concert there will be an introductory talk about innovations in music, organised by vrijdenkersfestival. the talk starts at 7:30 pm. entrance is free.
